Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education at Immanuel plays a unique role in delivery of the College’s mission statement. It provides learning and experiences outside the classroom through a series of camps for Years 7–10. These are compulsory for all students and are assessed and included in semester reports.

The programs at each year level have their own distinct character but there are a number of features common to all:
• Promotion of interpersonal skills, leadership and self-reliance.
• Enjoyment and appreciation of our natural environment.
• Development of appropriate skills and safety protocols.
Our Outdoor Education program, while being part of the Physical Educational curriculum, is unique with more than 30 academic staff from across all faculties being involved. The ongoing commitment of these staff and input from professional Outdoor Ed instructors has given us an ideal balance of expertise, commitment and care.

Program for 2012

YEAR 7 AQUATICS CAMPS
Our 3 day Aquatics Camps are held at Murraylands Aquatics Centre, Murray Bridge early in Term 1. Students attend in their tutor groups with their class teacher plus Outdoor Ed staff. Instruction is provided by Murraylands staff.

YEAR 8 ADVENTURE CAMPS
4 day camps are held early in Term 4 at the Scott Creek Outdoor Education facility near Morgan. Students attend in tutor groups, generally with their tutors and some subject teachers. Professional instructors are also employed for adventure activities.

YEAR 9 JOURNEY CAMPS
These five day programmes are held during four periods during Term 2. They aim to build on skills learned in Year 8 and promote a higher level of independence. They are based at the Melrose Campsite and in Mt Remarkable National Park in the Lower Flinders Ranges. Students attend in their Journey group, generally with their Journey tutor and are accompanied by PE staff, other academic staff and Outdoor Education instructors.

YEAR 9 JOURNEY SOLO CAMPS
This two day programme is conducted in Term 3 at Illawonga Campsite at Swan Reach on the River Murray. The camps are conducted separately for the boys and girls cohorts in Year 9. The key activity is a solo camping experience isolated from other students in a Mallee woodland setting. The experience is a culminating activity linked to longer term learning sequences in relation to resilience and self reliance in the Journey curriculum. The solo camp also includes a series of personal challenges including caving.

YEAR 10 ADVENTURE WEEK
Our Year 10 Adventure camps provide some of our students’ most memorable experiences. They offer a range of challenging activities often in spectacular settings, developing skills that can be used for life-long enjoyment and benefit. They are held in conjunction with the ‘Work Observation’ Program in Term 3, Week 5 and Week 8. Students are offered a range of options and are asked to nominate a first and second preference activity. Students will complete their ‘Work Observation’ in one week and participate in the Outdoor Ed option in the other week.
